shane petersen, LCMFT

Hello! I’m Shane Petersen. I grew up in a small town of only 3000 people. What we lacked in stoplights we made up for in hospitality. My town did not provide much for opportunities, but I was always encouraged to go to college to help others. I originally attended college to study medicine but switched to mental health after learning about some of my family member’s personal struggles. Moving out to the Kansas City area for graduate school was one of the best decisions I ever made. As a life-long KC Chiefs and KU basketball fan, I have found my community!

As a bit of a self-proclaimed nerd, I enjoy studying the mechanisms of the brain, looking up details on the next Star Wars release, and finding new strategies to beat whatever video game I am playing at the moment. In my free time, I am most likely watching The Office, hanging with my pets, or on a movie date with my wife.

After graduating from graduate school, I continued my therapy education through specialized training and certificate programs; including Brainspotting, Gottman training, and CBT-I. I enjoy working with couples, individuals, and teens. My focus areas are trauma, anxiety, relationships, anger, and media use (video games, social media, pornography). I meet with teenagers (age 15-18) and adults.
